While you should not base your opinion of yourself solely off of what others think, it doesn't hurt to get a little positive reinforcement once in a while, and it can change your perspective of yourself. We often times have skewed misconceptions of ourselves and our self worth. The people in our lives can see us in a way we cannot, they see our eyes light up when we get excited, they see us laugh at the jokes they tell, they know the face you make right before you're about to cry. They are able to see the version of yourself that you often dismiss. I find that people often say to me that they wish I could see myself through their eyes. I think it is important to be able to take a step back and evaluate ourselves from a different perspective. By texting some of the people in my life I was given a whole different outlook on myself as a person. I feel as though self acceptance is key, and that you must learn to love yourself, however the love you receive from others should not be diminished. We judge ourselves in such harsh ways that no other person can, and that is not fair to us. So I decided to ask for my friends "two cents" about me, and I was blown away by the responses.
"You're beautiful, smart, and determined. You're one of the best writers I know because you're not afraid to speak your mind."
"You're a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day. Your smile outshines your words."
"Olivia is extremely outgoing, friendly, and caring. She brightens up any room she enters and can make anyone laugh."
"A very outgoing person with a niche for learning and positive thinking. A spreader of good thoughts, love, and creativity."
"You are insanely funny and witty. But also really caring and humble."
"Olivia takes pride and passion in her actions. Olivia is a true, caring friend with a big heart."
"You are a young women with an old soul, and big heart. You are outgoing, entertaining, passionate, determined, and loved."
"Olivia is extremely down to earth, which makes her such a real and compassionate young woman. She is hard-working and inspires other young woman to be true to who they are."
"You are kind and hardworking and have a great sense of right and wrong and always see the best in every situation."
"You are motivated and ambitious, always giving your full effort to everything you set your mind to. While you may think you overwork yourself sometimes because of this, you've become mature through your struggles and they have allowed you to find things that really matter to you and that you are willing to devote your time to."
"Olivia's most important and most admirable quality is her fearlessness. Her ability to disregard what anyone may think of her and completely be herself allows her to live life to the fullest with courage and integrity. Best of luck to one of my oldest friends! Love you so much Olivia!"
So there you have it. THANK YOU to all the lovely people who said such kind, heartfelt words about me, it means the world to me. But this just proves that when prompted to describe me, not one person described me in the negative ways that I would when asked to describe myself. The people who love you in your life see you for your true, wonderful self, and you should too. This activity was really eye opening and made me see how hard I have been on myself, when there are so many things about myself that I should love.
I challenge you all to see your self from someone else's eyes, and you will see that you are never as terrible as you think.
How do you view yourself? What would your friends say about you?
