Tomorrow at midnight the ball will drop and people will pop champagne and clink classes to 2017 and look forward to all of the promise in the new year. 2017 is a clean slate, a fresh start, a chance to leave everything that happened in 2016 behind and start a new. It's time to close the book that was 2016 and begin to write on the new, crisp, pages of the next book that is 2017. But before the new year begins I feel as though I have to say goodbye to everything that was 2016. In order to make the most out of the new year you have to let go of last years baggage. 2016 was a year filled with ups and downs and lessons learned, but there are certain things that should be left in 2016 and bridges that should be burned. In order to live a positive and happy 2017 you have to leave behind what bought you down in 2016.
Say goodbye to the heartache.
I think it is safe to say 2016 was not a fantastic year for a lot of people. There were tough times and struggles that made life challenging and impacted us, but we don't need to carry that with us into the new year. While the hardships we have faced have changed us or shaped us in some ways, the pain and negativity they brought to our lives deserves to be left in 2016. The new year is a chance to let go of the pain and sadness you've endured over the past year and make room for better things in 2017.You cannot be happy if you carry all your old crap with you into the new year. Whatever happened is over and done and you learned from it. Stop holding onto things that make you sad or bitter, what's the point of that? Let it all go, you deserve a fresh start and a year filled with happiness.
Say goodbye to mistakes you've made.
I hope I'm not alone when I say that I've made more than a handful of mistakes over the last 365 days. Mistakes happen and all you can do is learn from them is move on, there is no sense in resenting yourself for the blunders you've made. You cannot change the past, as much as we often wish we could, so accept your mistakes, do your best to learn from them, and move on. Your mistakes do not define you and they do not make you a bad person. Go into 2017 regret free and leave your mistakes in the past.
Say goodbye to toxic people.
Literally, tell toxic people to fuck off, they deserve no place in your 2017. The people who brought you down in 2016 and made you feel shitty do not need to stay in your life. Really think hard about who was there for you and who was not and who brought you joy and who brought you to tears. Don't let toxic people bring negetivity into your new year. Friends are going to come and go throughout the years and it's totally okay. Toxic people prevent you from being happy and only drag you down and hurt your heart. It can be hard eliminating people from your life, but make this the year that you believe you deserve better. Make this the year you cut ties with people who bring nothing but anger and tears into your life. Having toxic people in your life is like drinking poison, you are only hurting yourself in the end. Say goodbye to anyone who doesn't make you happy.
Say goodbye to unhealthy habits.
We all have bad habits that we need to break, so let's make 2017 the year we do it. Whatever it is you do to hurt yourself physically or mentally has got to go. You only have this one life and body and you should love and cherish them both. Stop starving yourself, stop biting your nails, stop the self deprecating thoughts, just stop harming your health. Go to bed earlier, shower often, cut your hair, go for a walk, do some yoga. It isn't easy, but it is so, so worth it in the end. Slowly but surely if you start cutting bad habits out of your life you will see huge improvements. In order to be happy you have to be healthy, so kiss those unhealthy habits goodbye.
Say goodbye to negativity.
A negative mind will never give you a positive life. Any negative thoughts you had in 2016, leave them there and let it all go. Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit. Leave behind the little voices in your head that have been telling you that you aren't good enough and have been dragging you down. Negativity impacts your mental and physical health and makes for a pretty crappy life. Make 2016 a negativity free year and focus on the positives, you will be a lot happier.
Say goodbye to unrealistic expectations.
There is nothing wrong with setting goals for yourself, but you have to make sure they are within reach. If you set your goals too high you are only setting yourself up for failure which will lead to self deprecation. We are our own worst critics and eventually it only leads to our demise. Stop being so damn hard on yourself and beating yourself up all the time. Let go of all those crazy unrealistic expectations and set goals you can reach so that you can feel good about yourself.
Say goodbye to peoples harsh words.
Let go of all of the things people said to/about you that make you love yourself a little bit less. Don't carry those things with you into the new year because they are not true and they will only bring you down. What other people say about you has nothing to do with you and everything to do with them. There will always be people with cruel words to say, but you have to have the strength to brush it off and move on with your head held high. Don't let the bad things other people have said about you stay in your head in the new year, let it go and leave it behind.
Say goodbye to anything that doesn't bring you joy.
Honestly, I don't know about you, but in 2017 I just want to get rid of all the shit and all the people who don't make me happy. I don't want to let another year go by doing things with people who don't fill my soul with bliss. Think long and hard about what and who it is who makes you happy, and everything else can be left in the past. If you hate running, don't fucking do it. Find a work out routine that works for you and doesn't make you miserable. Hate your job? Fucking quit. Follow your heart, find what you love and just do it. Don't stray from the things that make you happy. Whatever made your life shitty in 2016 doesn't need to be brought into 2017. Leave the negativity behind and move forward to embracing a life you love.
Say hello to 2017.
Say hello to all of the wonder and promise that this new year has in store. Say hello to the endless possibilites that await you and all of the adventures that have yet to unfold. This is your chance to make changes, to reinvent yourself and your life, to do those things you've been putting off. Say hello to new people that will become good friends. Say hello to new experiences and welcome them with open arms. Wonderful things are in store, you just have to put good out into the world and you will receive good things back. Burn the pictures, throw away the scale, forgive yourself, think positively, and be happy. However 2016 went for you, good, bad, or somewhere in between, just know that tomorrow night when the ball drops it's all over. The pages are blank, it's up to you to write the next year.
The picture above is my moments of happiness from each day the past year. I poured them out and read them all one by one. Some were drunken scribbles that made me laugh, some were heartfelt moments that made me tear up. Either way, reading them was a reminder that though I can say this wasn't my finest year overall, there was always something good in every day. I cannot wait to refill my jar starting Januart 1st and I really encourage you to do the same, it was very rewarding. I wish you all a happy and healthy new year and am very grateful to the people who have stuck by me the past year and will continue to in 2017.
Love Always,
Olivia Jane
